• Not a waste (2013)

Essay film, based on an private photographic archive, that documents the early times of Polymer recycling. A survey at different places in India (Delhi, Hoshiarpur, Mumbai) was accompanied by developing, bilateral economic relations between german/western and indian companies.

„Time as a distance is poignantly present Cathleen Schuster’s work Not a Waste. The work is a video that incorporates photographic slides that her father made of a project he took part in the 1980s to transport large quantities of plastic from India to Germany in order to have it recycled. The distance between these two points is over 9000 km, or is it (as the narrator baits the viewer)? What we see is not only the documentation of an expedition ‘forward’ in regards to its good intentions, but also a seemingly ‘backwards’ journey with insight into an outmoded mode of production, consumption, waste and the promise of renewal. “ (Huib Haye van der Werf)
